My Little Bug Lovers

Both of my kids have a fascination of all things creepy and crawly - especially my little girl!    But I just had to share a couple of bug stories from this week.  First of all, we were about ready to head out the door to daycare yesterday when Ava ran back into her room to get something.  Now this is not all that unusual that they decide they want to take something with them to the sitter.  But I followed her in and saw that she was getting something off of her dresser and had it wrapped tightly in her hand.  When I asked her what it was, she got a little grin on her face and showed me the dead grasshopper in her hand!  Not at all what I expected!  When I asked her where she got it, she told me she had it in her "special" jar on her dresser and apparently brought it home in her pocket from daycare the day before!  I made her at least put it in a plastic bag to take back with her.  They had apparently been playing with the grasshopper a lot (likely why it was then a DEAD grasshopper) the day before because Roxane immediately recognized it even when Ava showed up with it that day.  I never imagined that my sweet little princess would be harboring dead grasshoppers in her bedroom.

And today, Ava was thrilled when I found a centipede as I was digging some dirt.  She played with him for a LONG time, and was eager to show him to Blaine when he woke up from his nap.  After Blaine and I had come back inside and Ava was over at the playset, I heard her start crying hysterically.  Of course, I immediately went out to see what was wrong since it was a possible hurt kind of cry.  However, I soon discovered that she was not hurt at all, but had dropped and lost her centipede!

The hunt has been on for locusts and locust shells around here lately too - we have to search the trees almost every night, then both kids fight over who gets the shells of course.  And then there are the worms, and crickets, and ants, and any other kind of creepy crawly thing that they can find!  Ava is routinely found toting her bug box and butterfly net around these days:)  Maybe I have some budding entomologists on my hands!
