We attended the funeral today for John's Grandma Woods. She passed away Thursday after suffering a massive stroke nearly a week prior. She was John's last living grandparent and it is always hard to say a final goodbye to your grandparents. Our kids have been blessed to have a close relationship to so may great-grandparents. I still have three grandparents and they have known both of John's grandmas. Death continues to be a confusing subject for an almost five year old. Blaine is young enough that he really doesn't get it at all, but Ava is more acutely affected. She was rather sad when I told her that Great-Grandma Woods died, but we continued to talk about how she was in heaven and living with Jesus now. Coincidentally, her lesson this past week for AWANA Cubbies was concerning heaven and what it might be like. Little did I know that Great-Grandma Woods would be going there less than 24 hours after going through her book lesson together. Ava was convinced that everything would be golden in heaven and drew pictures of golden trees, rivers, ground and sky in her book for her lesson. I love that I can have these great conversations with my kids about what is written in God's Word and that I can start to see some of these truths taking root in their hearts. It is still confusing for a kid though to see the body of their loved one after they know that they have died and should be in heaven.
The viewing and funeral were held this afternoon and my parents brought the kids close to funeral time so that they didn't have to attend the two hour viewing with us. We hadn't paid a lot of attention to where Great-Grandma lay, but Ava immediately wanted to go see her after the service, so we took her up to the casket. She was extremely sad, looking at her intently and I finally had to pry her off of the casket so that others could have a chance to come view her one last time. She then colored a picture for her on the way to the cemetery and we made sure we left it for her with her flowers at the grave site. So very thoughtful - I am sure that Great-Grandma would love to put it up on her bulletin board in heaven with all the rest of her photos and pictures from her great-grandkids.
We love and will miss you Grandma Woods!!!
