Pumpkin Carving

We carved our pumpkins this afternoon - we had gotten one for each of the kids on our trip to Michigan.  The big decision was what to carve on each of them, so we started looking at some pumpkin patterns on-line.  Ava said she wanted Strawberry Shortcake, but saw a Hello Kitty pattern that she liked before we found any Strawberry Shortcake ones.  And Blaine saw a Thomas the train one and loved it of course.  So after Blaine's nap, we started the carving fun!
But we soon found that Blaine's pumpkin had some VERY tough skin!!!  I couldn't hardly get a knife through it, let alone cut it.  So John got the jigsaw out to open this pumpkin up.
We got all the guts scooped out - Ava loved it, although she kept saying "yuck" the whole time.
And John had to also get the drill out to start the holes for the Thomas pattern.  I was voting to go with a generic jack-o-lantern face after finding out that we had a super-shell pumpkin, but John was determined that he could cut out Thomas.  He ended up doing a very good job, although it took much longer than Ava and I did to carve out Hello Kitty.
I've got to say - this was the first time I had to carve pumpkins with power tools, but they turned out pretty good and the kids were happy:)  They are looking forward to Halloween in a few days!
