New Project

My Grandma is an excellent seamstress and my Mom is also very good at sewing, but I have never picked up that talent.  My only sewing skills were learned in vet school surgery classes.  However, I have recently been thinking that I might like to be able to sew a bit.  So I asked for a sewing machine for
Christmas and my in-laws got me one.  So then I had to learn how to use it.  I had watched my mom sew for years as I was growing up, so at least I had some skills from observation, even if not first-hand experience.  So I have been tinkering around with it - figuring out how to thread it and run it and practicing different stitches on an old towel.  Ava has loved helping me learn it - she may take after her Grandma and become the seamstress:)
So anyway, I decided to tackle a simple project that I had pinned on Pinterest a while back to make Ava a new skirt.  I think that John was wondering what happened to his wife as I started getting out fabric, marking, cutting and pinning it!  I actually ended up impressing myself a bit too!  But with Ava's help and constant watchful eye, I ended up with a fairly decent first project.  And I only had to call Mom once to ask for instructions on how to sew the ruffle properly in order to gather it up.  Ava is in love with her new skirt that we made from a pair of old jeans with holey knees and this heart fabric remnant that she fell in love with at Wal-mart last night.  She is so excited to wear it to preschool tomorrow!  And was also eager to model it here so that we could send a picture to Grandma of the finished product.
And I have discovered that just maybe I can learn to sew after all these years - and it might even be fun to do some little projects like this once in a while!
